Rockwool NyRock® technology - insulation for the future

Paul Barrett, Head of Product Management at ROCKWOOL®, gives an overview of the company’s latest stone wool insulation innovation – its NyRock technology
Rockwool NyRock Technology - The new beginning

The issue of energy performance has rarely been far from the news headlines over recent months and, while meeting regulations is front of mind for those within the construction industry, homeowners are also increasingly looking to make their homes safer and quieter.

To achieve these objectives, specifiers, contractors and housebuilders can tick many boxes by making informed material choices at the early stages of specification and adopting products, such as stone wool insulation, that deliver the total solution for safety, thermal and acoustic performance.

At ROCKWOOL, we’re mindful that the balance between building performance, sustainability and commerciality is a constant challenge. The Rockwool NyRock range has been created understanding those pressures, delivering lower lambda for thinner walls, while also providing the additional benefits of stone wool.

Introducing NyRock

Rockwool NyRock technology is an evolution in stone wool composition that currently delivers the lowest lambda stone wool insulation in the UK and Ireland. The lambda value measures a product's thermal conductivity – the lower the lambda value, the better it will be at reducing heat loss.

NyRock technology achieves this low lambda thanks to its more efficient fibre structure resulting in improved thermal properties which delivers a thermal conductivity as low as 0.032 W/mK.

All of our ROCKWOOL NyRock products have water repellent properties and with sustainability increasingly front of mind, can be recycled indefinitely. Stone wool insulation is manufactured from naturally occurring volcanic rock that is abundant in supply as it is continually replenished by the earth’s crust.

Three new stone wool insulation products are now available as part of the NyRock® range:

NyRock® Rainscreen 032 & NyRock® Frame Slab 032

NyRock Rainscreen 032 is specifically developed for ventilated cladding systems and sealed structures such as curtain walling. It combines a low thermal conductivity of 0.032 W/mK and a non-combustible Euroclass A1 rating along with independently tested acoustic performance and the potential for thinner wall constructions.

Created for straightforward installation as well as ongoing performance, the product can be easily fitted around brackets and other challenging details, with slabs designed to ‘knit together’ when tightly butted providing a continuous insulating layer that reduces thermal bridging.

For optimum thermal performance in framed structures, NyRock Rainscreen Slab 032 should be combined with NyRock Frame Slab 032 which has been purpose-designed for fitting between the studwork of external timber or light gauge steel frame walls.

Combined, NyRock Rainscreen 032 and Frame Slab 032 enable U-values to be met with a thinner wall construction versus standard stone wool solutions.

NyRock® Cavity Slab 032

Also available is NyRock Cavity Slab 032, a low lambda, non-combustible stone wool slab for full and partial fill masonry cavities that enables a thinner wall construction. Users can achieve a U-value of 0.18 W/m²K with a thickness of 150mm, depending on construction type, which is 25mm thinner than standard stone wool cavity products within the same wall build up.

NyRock Cavity Slab 032 comes in 455mm widths to suit standard vertical wall tie spaces and achieves a closely knitted joint with adjacent slabs, without the need for taping of the joints. This helps eliminate gaps allowing for continuity of insulation across the cavity.

Having undergone an extensive testing programme, NyRock Cavity Slab 032 is suitable for new build, renovations and extensions and has British Board of Agrément (BBA) certification for full and partial fill applications.
