Major Regeneration at the Heart of Barnsley Town Centre

We were delighted to supply Heraklith to the regeneration project of Barnsley Town Centre.
The Glass Works Public Square In Barnsley

The Glass Works is a major regeneration scheme in the heart of Barnsley Town Centre, bringing new and exciting ways for the local community to shop, relax and socialise.

The first phase of the development saw the town’s historic Barnsley Markets – granted a Royal Charter in 1249 – move to a contemporary and spacious new home in 2018, followed by the new state-of-the-art Library at the Lightbox and an independent food court, Market Kitchen, which both opened their doors to the public in 2019.

Construction on the final retail and leisure focussed phase of the scheme is well underway and expected to complete towards the end of 2021. In total, the scheme will deliver 25 shops (including Next, JD Sports and TK Maxx), seven restaurants (including Nando’s), a 13-screen Cineworld Cinema and Superbowl UK, plus up to 670 car parking spaces, high-quality public realm and a landmark central square.

The Challenge:

Henry Boot Construction, the principal contractor on The Glass Works project, were challenged with finding a soffit liner that could achieve the required thermal performance, whilst not impacting on the available and limited height in the multi-storey parking area.

The Solution:

Encon Insulation and Nevill Long’s Leeds branch and Heraklith were able to deliver exactly that – a fit for purpose soffit liner that achieved the required thermal performance. Based on Psi consultancy and in-depth U value calculations, the contractor was able to choose Heraklith solutions, only available in the UK through the Encon Insulation branch network.

“As the Distributor of Choice, we were able to offer a solution approved by Building Control for this project. We organised deliveries via our Leeds branch in loads that suited the site’s requirements and offered technical support in branch with our specialist team.”  – Chris Barlow, Product Development Director

Heraklith wood wool solutions offer a light-weight aesthetic finish whilst delivering the required thermal performance at the same time. The contractor chose the Heraklith Heratekta and Herafoam panels that guarantee fast installation because of their tongue and groove system that can be mounted with fewer screws per panel, saving installation time.

“We have found Encon to be proactive in assisting us with cost-effective solutions. Deliveries have arrived promptly as agreed and their sales and technical support has been outstanding. The site team has particularly found their reactive approach with respect to delivery changes extremely helpful, especially during the pandemic.” – Steve Green, Project Director at Henry Boot Construction
