Right First Time at Encon Birmingham

In the fast-paced and important world of passive fire protection, projects rely on short notice turnarounds and key decisions to be right first time. Delivering a safe, compliant solution in line with project timescales is a big responsibility, so the support of a trusted distributor partner is vital in ensuring products arrive as specified and on time.

As a dedicated Fire Protection Centre, Encon Birmingham offers a wide stock holding of passive fire protection products from trusted brands including Promat, Rockwool and Firefly, backed by a knowledgeable team. A deep understanding of key product ranges and vast industry experience ensures we can provide the right support for your project.

We continue our series of passive fire protection specialist interviews by speaking to Phil Nuttall, Business Unit Manager – Technical Solutions & Fire Protection, on how the branch’s expertise adds value to customers…

Phil comments: “It’s really important that customers feel confident they are not only buying the right products, but they are buying from people who know about the products in detail. With renewed focus on building safety, customers can rest assured the team at Encon Birmingham has the knowledge and experience to meet their requirements.

“As a passive fire protection specialist, I have worked hard to develop my knowledge and I’m proud to say I achieved my highly coveted IFE Level 2 qualification last year. I studied extremely hard and put in a lot of preparation to pass first time, which has been extremely beneficial to my personal development and gives customers confidence in my ability to assist them and their projects.”

Developed by The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) and the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP), qualification is regulated by Ofqual and certifies that Phil possesses the key knowledge and understanding he needs to support passive fire protection customers.

Phil adds: “My IFE qualification is a unique selling point for the branch, not only certifying my competence, but also helping to raise the bar around the branch. Several employees already have their ASFP Introduction to Passive Fire Protection qualification while some new members have joined the team, so I can use what I learned in my Level 2 to support them.

“We take a continuous approach to internal training, refreshing different areas of our passive fire protection knowledge, often led by developments in the industry. For example, the UK is in the process of adopting European regulations in many areas, so we make sure we keep track of changes and ensure these are covered in training.

“Neville White, our Business Development Director for Fire Protection is very supportive. Whether he is delivering training, visiting customers or liaising with our manufacturer partners, we can always call on his knowledge to make sure we get things right first time.”

In addition to product and application knowledge, the team at our Birmingham branch possesses longstanding experience working in specialist markets across the construction landscape. We understand what is needed in delivering to sites with specific requirements, and with a dedicated modern vehicle fleet and experienced drivers, we are ready to meet and exceed customer needs.

Phil explains: “I have worked here for over a decade and many of my colleagues have been involved in our industry throughout their careers, working on a multitude of different projects. Everyone in the team has their own specific areas of expertise, meaning we are well placed to support a wide spectrum of customer requirements.

“I manage our Technical Solutions offering alongside passive fire protection, and my knowledge in both areas is helpful when it comes to service penetrations and high temperature environments. Working in the fast-paced HVAC environment also benefits my fire protection customers as I am used to working at pace and reacting to customer needs, with a necessity to get things right first time.”
