The site is home to three decommissioned stations including Calder Hall, the world’s first commercial nuclear power station which operated between 1956 and 2003. Our North West branch supplies insulation materials to KAEFER so it can fulfil its maintenance contract at Sellafield, ensuring the safe storage of nuclear waste at the facility.
Encon has a longstanding and trusting relationship with KAEFER and has been heavily involved from the outset of the project. Indeed, we supported KAEFER in the bidding process, reaffirming that our status as a reliable distributor partner ensures reassurance of material supply.
Bob Cordall, Encon Technical Solutions Business Director, comments: “We have worked closely with KAEFER for many years, and I have known Ian Tattersall, Managing Director KAEFER UK & I for three decades. When KAEFER initially bid for the Sellafield contract, it was important to demonstrate the reliability of their supply chain, so I compiled a proposal detailing how our stock holding, fleet capabilities, supplier relationships and safety accreditations would ensure this.”
Since the contract was secured, we have regularly supplied KAEFER with insulation materials for the contract. This includes pipework insulation as well as ancillaries such as fixtures and fittings from market-leading manufacturers including Rockwool and Armacell, and ensuring materials are delivered on time as specified. Materials are stored at our North West branch, where the 104,000 square foot warehouse ensures stock is on the ground ready to deliver at short notice.
A rigorous vetting process must be followed for materials, vehicles and drivers to access Sellafield, which adds to lead times and reduces flexibility. We send most deliveries to an off-site warehouse facility where materials can be security checked and cleared prior to being taken to site.
Michael Bear, Framework Manager, KAEFER UK & Ireland, explains: “Delivering to Sellafield includes stringent security measures and regulations, and Encon has added value for many years. Communication between all parties is exemplary, and Encon is extremely willing to offer differing solutions and methods to support KAEFER at Sellafield, including storing materials until required, short notice of material delivery and daily engagement and updates. Materials are also delivered right first time, enabling KAEFER to adhere to our strict programme and key deliverables.”

Klaud Szewczyk, Internal Sales at Encon & Nevill Long North West, adds: “I work closely with our contacts at KAEFER and the delivery point to book deliveries in at specific times and let them know exactly what materials to expect. We coordinate stock levels, lead times and logistics to ensure materials arrive on time and in full, including all relevant documentation. Occasionally, alternative arrangements or adjustments need to be made, so transparent communication ensures we can be flexible to keep work progressing.”
