Sharing the full facts about Full-Fill Insulation

    13th November 2012

With tighter energy efficiency requirements now a key part of both the Code for Sustainable Homes and Part L1A of the Building Regulations, Knauf Insulation is dispelling the myths about full-fill glass mineral wool cavity wall insulation and re-confirming its place as a highly cost-effective means of achieving compliance.

Accounting for more than 55 percent of the market for external cavity wall insulation, full-fill glass mineral wool can deliver comparable thermal performance as like for like partial fill solutions, such as rigid foam boards, but at a significantly lower cost.  What’s more, as full-fill solutions are quick and easy to install, with no need for retaining discs, labour costs are similarly reduced.

Steve Smith, market manager – residential at Knauf Insulation, comments: “Our full-fill glass mineral wool solutions offer a number of advantages over partial fill solutions, with the ability to achieve comparable thermal performance at a much lower price point clearly a major factor in its favour.

“For example, installing Knauf Insulation’s Earthwool® DriTherm Cavity Slab 32 Ultimate in a 100mm cavity, which is currently the most common cavity width, will provide an equivalent U-value to the best performing partial fill solution, but in a less expensive and more convenient format.”

Knauf Insulation’s range of Earthwool DriTherm Cavity Slabs provide thermally efficient solutions that are BBA approved for use in all exposure zones and are backed by a 50-year performance guarantee.  The slabs are friction fitted and flexible enough to mould around services and wall contours, leaving far fewer air spaces than rigid foam boards.

As a high-quality, non-combustible material, Earthwool DriTherm Cavity Slabs also achieve the unbeatable Euroclass A1 reaction to fire rating. Furthermore, they do not emit toxic fumes or smoke, the two biggest hazards to life in the event of a fire.

Knauf Insulation also offers a range of blown-in glass mineral wool products, as part of the Supafil® Cavity Wall Insulation system. Only available through approved contractors, Supafil Cavity Wall Insulation is a loose, non-combustible glass mineral wool that is blown into existing masonry cavity walls.

All of Knauf Insulation’s glass mineral wool products deliver exceptional environmental performance and those in slab or wool form are manufactured using the innovative ECOSE® Technology - a revolutionary, bio-based, formaldehyde-free binder technology that is based on rapidly renewable materials, rather than petro-based chemicals.  Containing a high proportion of recycled glass and fully recyclable at the end of a building’s life, glass mineral wool also requires less overall energy to manufacture it than some alternative materials and achieves a generic A+ BRE Green Guide rating.

“With the revisions to the Code and Part L imposing even higher thermal standards, it is important to be aware of how these targets can be met cost effectively.  Full-fill cavity wall solutions provide effective, efficient and sustainable fabric solutions that do not incur significant additional build costs,” concludes Steve.
