Paroc, manufacturer of energy efficient and fire safe insulation solutions, has announced that after third-party independent testing of its water repellent (WR) insulation products, the company is proven to offer high performing solutions to corrosion protection.

Tests conducted at the Eurofins laboratories confirm that Paroc WR pipe insulation performs more than 10 times better than the requirements of the toughest standard available, which is EN13472. With a water absorption as low as 0.1kg/m2 at temperatures up to 300°C, the Paroc WR products were proven to perform, even at temperatures 50° higher.

Corrosion Under Insulation – Understanding the Problem

“Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is one of the biggest challenges when it comes to providing insulation solutions for industrial applications,” explained Craig Treanor, Technical Manager at Paroc.

“It refers to the external deterioration of carbon and low alloy steel piping, vessels and industrial equipment that occurs beneath externally clad or jacketed insulation, as a result of water penetration and condensation.

CUI is a major concern for factory owners and operators, as it dramatically reduces the lifetime of piping and equipment, and increases the risk of leakages, shutdowns and potential injury to personnel.”

Low moisture absorption is a very important property of industrial insulation solutions, since they are at risk of being exposed to water, high humidity or other liquids. Paroc has been researching, developing and manufacturing WR stone wool insulation products for more than 20 years and has been a long-term advocate of this naturally occurring material’s ability to prevent CUI and allow moisture to easily egress.

“Water in insulation can dramatically decrease its performance and increase the risk of generating a corrosive environment at the surface of insulated equipment,” concluded Craig Treanor.

“To put it simply, less water and faster dry-out equals less corrosion. The testing carried out by Eurofins proves that Paroc is leading the way in creating solutions that eliminate the potential damage caused by water absorption and with the broadest product offering of WR products including pipe sections, wired mats, mats and slabs, we can meet a diverse range of project requirements.”

Paroc’s WR Solutions for Prevention of Corrosion Under Insulation

Paroc stone wool contains very low amounts of water leachable ions, such as chloride, sodium, silicate and fluoride, and all Paroc products meet the requirements of ASTM C795, as well as AGI Q132. The products are chemically inert to steelwork, hence mitigating and effectively reducing the risk of corrosion and external stress cracking.

Key Features of Paroc WR Solutions:

  • 10 × less water absorption than the requirements of the toughest standard (EN13472/24h)
  • Highest temperature range of <300°C / 572°F
  • Safe to use during painting operations and certified according to the requirements of the coating compatibility standard VDMA 24364

Paroc has a broad offering of WR products, including pipe sections, wired mats, mats and slabs to prevent corrosion under insulation. You can find out more about the Pro Pipe Section WR100 and WR140 on our site, if you have an enquiry about other products in the WR range please contact us.
