If you are a contractor looking at an external wall package and wondering why one fire tested breather membrane is specified over another, you are not alone. On paper, products can look similar, and it is not until you look into the detail that you see which materials are best suited to your project.
That is where DuPont™ Tyvek® Trifecta™ stands out. It is an A2-s1,d0 breather membrane for external walls, but there is much more to the product than just its reaction to fire classification. It is what that classification means in terms of risk, especially for installers who need confidence that the wall build-up on site matches the way the product has been tested and approved for use.
The simplest way to think about Tyvek® Trifecta™ is that it gives project teams an A2 option when they want to reduce fire risk as far as practical in the external wall. The minimum membrane guidance commonly discussed in Approved Document B is class B-s3,d0, so A2 is not always the baseline requirement for a membrane.
But many stakeholders do not stop at the minimum. Developers, insurers, architects and main contractors may all want a more risk-averse approach, especially on taller buildings, and residential schemes on projects where safety is the top priority.
That is why Tyvek® Trifecta™ often comes into the conversation even where the regulations do not explicitly demand an A2 membrane, where clients and design teams want extra reassurance. It can also support airtightness when it is detailed and sealed correctly, which can help overall envelope performance, particularly on retrofit projects where the design team is trying to improve airtightness via the external facade. That said, the main reason it is specified should remain clear: it is an A2 classified breather membrane for projects where that level of performance is wanted or required.
Tyvek® Trifecta™ is usually specified in ‘relevant buildings’; in England and Wales, this generally means a building at least 18 metres above ground level that contains dwellings, an institution or rooms for residential purposes.
It is also specified in other safety critical developments such as schools, universities, hospitals and leisure centres, where designers want to reduce risk and achieve a higher level of fire performance despite not technically falling into the relevant building category.
Tyvek® Trifecta™ should not be seen as only a fire protection product. The fire classification is the headline, but on-site contractors still need a membrane that performs as a membrane should. Tyvek® Trifecta™ delivers W1 water resistance, which is the highest class for breather membranes and particularly relevant for rainscreen cladding, especially within exposed locations. It also remains vapour open, so moisture within the wall can still dry outward as per the wall design.
There is also a wider thermal performance story. When laps, penetrations and interfaces are sealed correctly, Tyvek® Trifecta™ can provide an external airtightness line as part of the wider envelope strategy. It also gives contractors more flexibility during their construction programme because it offers up to six months of UV exposure resistance. On larger jobs where glazing, cladding and other trades do not always land exactly when planned, that extra exposure timeframe can make a genuine difference.
From an installer’s point of view, one of the most useful advantages of Tyvek® Trifecta™ is its speed of application. It can now be installed vertically as well as horizontally, opening up a different way of working on suitable projects. If the access setup allows it, installers can run the membrane vertically using a scissor lift rather than working horizontally, which can reduce handling and labour demands.
The other critical consideration is that the installation protocol should not deviate from testing methods. With fire tested membranes, the substrate, fixing method and the way the system is detailed all matter. If a product has been tested over one substrate and then ends up installed over something materially different on site, that can take the project outside the scope of the original fire test evidence.
The wider system around the membrane is also important to ensure it performs as tested. Tyvek® Trifecta™ is best understood as part of a wider DuPont fire performance approach for the building envelope, complemented by other fire tested membranes, AVCLs and tapes, all of which are available from your local Encon branch.
For contractors and specifiers, the key point is not just choosing a membrane with the right fire classification, but making sure the whole wall build-up works together in practice. When fire performance, moisture management, airtightness and detailing are considered together as one joined-up strategy, teams are better placed to make consistent decisions and reduce risk across the envelope.
